Washington, D.C. houses a vibrant international law community. The community includes lawyers, legal professionals, policy experts, and civil servants working in diplomatic missions, international organizations with headquarters in the District, the U.S. Government and its agencies, and those working in private law firms and businesses engaged in international commerce and trade, humanitarian law, foreign relations, international commercial disputes, non-profit organizations, and international human rights issues.

The D.C. Bar’s International Law Community brings together this diverse network of professionals. Members discuss pressing legal issues with international importance and have opportunities for continuing education, building professional relationships, community service, developing policy positions, and issuing statements on important legal issues.

The scope of the International Community’s work is necessarily broad, including practice areas such as U.S. import and export laws, foreign investment, international finance, international antitrust enforcement, human rights, global technology issues, international organizations and NGOs, foreign state sovereign immunity, national security, immigration, intellectual property, international criminal law, and public international law.

In FY 2023-2024 the International Law Community organized, sponsored and co-sponsored over 30 programs for lawyers, law students, and the public on topics in international law. We look forward to another year of excellent programming and welcome suggestions for topics.

The D.C. Bar International Community has the following nine subcommittees: Cybersecurity, Data Privacy, and Global Technology; Immigration and Human Rights; Inter-American Legal Affairs; International Dispute Resolution; International Intellectual Property; International Investment and Finance; International Trade; National Security; and Public International and Criminal Law.

Members of the D.C. Bar International Community host a Podcast, Spotify: The Tea on International Arbitration.
Public programs such as continuing legal education and receptions are publicized through the ILC Community LISTSERV emails that are sent to all ILC Community Members and other subscribers and published on the DC Bar’s website.

Membership in the D.C. Bar is not a requirement for engagement with the D.C. Bar International Community. If you’d like to engage with the D.C. Bar’s International Community, please register using the Bar’s website or contact a member of the D.C. Bar International Community Steering Committee.
